The crew of the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> comes across the highly advanced world of Aldea, a planet that keeps itself hidden behind a sophisticated energy shield. However, Captain Picard soon learns that the Aldeans have deliberately allowed their planet to be detected, enabling them to come aboard the ship and abduct several children, including Wesley; the Aldeans have lost the ability to reproduce, and now plan to use the kidnapped children to perpetuate their race, ignoring all attempts at negotiation by Picard. While Doctor Beverly Crusher attempts to determine the cause of the Aldeans' sterility, Picard and his officers must find a way for the <I>Enterprise</I> to penetrate the planet's shielding and rescue the children...
