As the flukemen close in on Mulder, the injured girl dies in his arms. The creatures overwhelm the agent, biting into his flesh… only to be incinerated by a blast from a flame-thrower carried by the local sheriff, now dressed in a protective suit. The sheriff manages to destroy most of the monsters, but one manages to escape into the filthy waters… Mulder comes to in the hospital, where Scully has just finished removing an impregnated colony of tiny mutant parasites from his bile duct. They are soon joined by the sheriff, who confesses that he knows the origin of the flukemen: in 1986 he and his fellow soldiers were despatched to the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the Ukraine to drain the reactor’s coolant into the sewers; Mikhail’s friend, Gregory was trapped inside the tunnel as the coolant was drained, and the radioactive fluid reacted with a colony of flukes to create something monstrous – something that is still searching for Mikhail…
