Mulder and Scully are called in by Assistant Director Anna Morales to investigate a case of domestic terrorism in Murphysville, North Carolina, when a sixteen-year old girl named Joanie Cartwright used a home-made bomb to blow up an abortion clinic. The agents push back on their assignment in favour of local authorities – until they see CCTV photos showing a halo around Joanie’s head, and a spectral figure standing behind her. Arriving at the god-fearing town, Scully finds Joanie’s blind mother in the local church and then meets the pastor, Alvin Johns. Meanwhile, Mulder pays a visit to Joanie’s boyfriend Daniel, who lives in the town’s park. Finding Mulder reading through his book on demonology, Daniel tries to run away – but is stopped by a crowd of locals, all of whom are blinded from self-infliction. Taking Daniel back to Murphysville police station for questioning, Mulder and Scully are shocked when the boy uses a pen to blind himself. Elsewhere, Joanie makes her way through the town, leaving a trail of suicide victims behind her…
