Plagued by voices and visions from the force attempting to control him, Mulder arrives at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, where he draws the attention of security guards. He is intercepted by a customs official who also carries the mysterious force, and taken to an inspection cell; the woman then creates a fire and stabs herself in the eye with scissors, providing Mulder with a distraction that enables him to escape and join a group of Hungarian refugees. Meanwhile, Scully attempts to elicit the help of Assistant Director Skinner at FBI Headquarters, but only succeeds in being taken off the case. She contacts the enigmatic Ben-Brahim, but he deflects her questions about holes in the sky, and vows to uncover who is behind the attempts to discredit his Shyma Foundation. Later that night, Scully receives a call from Ben-Brahim, with a warning that Mulder has been targeted by evil forces, and an offer to help find him…
