Aboard Thunderbird 5, EOS detects an anomaly in space: a comet that was due to miss Earth has somehow changed course, and will now hit the planet. John scans the comet and finds an engine strapped to the ice – an engine built by the inept industrialist Langstrom Fischler. While Alan and Virgil blast off in Thunderbird 3, an angry Brains contacts Fischler, who explains that he is bringing the comet into Earth’s orbit so he can mine it for water to help people. When Brains points out that the ridiculous plan will result in the comet crashing into the Earth, Fischler attempts a final course correction to make the comet bounce of the planet’s atmosphere; but Fischler’s control system malfunctions, and control of the rocket is lost. Thunderbird 3 arrives at the comet, where it locks onto the icy surface and begins drilling into the core so that Virgil can deploy explosives to blow it up. But then Fischler gets the rocket working again, causing the comet to fling Thunderbird 3 off into space as it changes course again. To Brains’ horror he realises that not only will the comet still hit Earth, it will now smash through the Global One space station on the way down…
